Getting started off-road with the Himalayan 450

The Himalayan 450 is built for trips where the tarmac ends. Gravel, field and forest tracks, however, require a slightly different technique from roads. These basics will help you take your first steps off-road with confidence.

Getting started off-road with the Himalayan 450

Where to start

Off-road riding is learned in a safe place, not on a trip through an unfamiliar forest. An ideal place is a flat gravel area or an off-road riding course. Remember that riding a motorcycle is allowed only on roads where it is permitted – forest and field tracks often prohibit motor vehicles.

Stand on the footpegs

When standing, the motorcycle can move freely beneath you and you have better balance. Posture:

  • feet on the footpegs with toes pointing straight ahead, weight on the balls of your feet,
  • knees slightly bent, gripping the tank,
  • arms relaxed, elbows slightly away from the body,
  • look far ahead, not right in front of the front wheel.

Throttle, brakes and clutch

  • Apply the throttle gently – the rear wheel easily spins on a loose surface.
  • Brake more with the rear brake and apply the front carefully.
  • Use the clutch to modulate the engagement smoothly at low speed.
  • Low speed with slightly applied throttle stabilises the motorcycle.

Riding modes and ABS

The Himalayan 450 offers riding modes and the option to adjust the ABS behaviour for off-road riding. You will find the exact description of the settings in the manual. On the road, always use the full ABS function.

Tyre pressure

Experienced off-road riders sometimes lower the pressure slightly for better grip. If you do, do not forget to inflate the tyres back to the specified value before returning to tarmac. An under-inflated tyre is dangerous on the road.

The most common beginner mistakes

  • gripping the handlebars tightly and stiff arms,
  • looking right in front of the front wheel instead of where you want to go,
  • hard braking with the front wheel on gravel,
  • too high a speed in unfamiliar terrain.

Gear and safety

Sturdy boots with ankle protection, gloves and protectors matter more off-road than on the road. Do not ride alone to remote places and let someone know where you are going.

After the ride

Wash the motorcycle, clean the mud off the radiator, and clean and lube the chain. Check the bolts, levers and tyres. If you would like to try the Himalayan 450, arrange a test ride at Royal Enfield GARAGE.
