Combine several layers
The best protection is a combination of a mechanical lock, electronic security and sensible parking. A single element on its own will not stop an experienced thief.
Mechanical locks
- Brake disc lock: small and easy to carry. Choose a model with an alarm or a reminder cable so that you do not ride off with the wheel locked.
- Chain or U-lock: the strongest protection. Lock the frame or rear wheel to a solid anchor point, ideally high above the ground so that it cannot be cut while resting on the ground.
- Garage floor anchor: a steel eye firmly embedded in the floor or wall.
Look for locks with an independent security certificate.
Electronic security
- An alarm with a motion and tilt sensor alerts people nearby.
- A GPS tracker hidden in the motorcycle helps the police find it.
- An immobiliser prevents the engine from starting without the correct key.
Parking
- Park in well-lit places where people walk by or there is a camera.
- At home, the motorcycle belongs in a locked garage. Outside, cover it with a tarpaulin – a thief cannot see what motorcycle is under it.
- Always lock the handlebars with the steering lock, even when you step away only briefly.
- Never leave documents or a spare key with the motorcycle.
Be careful on social media
Photos of a new motorcycle in front of your house with a visible address, or regularly shared location of your garage, can help the wrong people. Before posting, look at what is in the background of the photo.
Documentation and insurance
Write down the VIN and photograph the motorcycle from all sides, including modifications and accessories. In case of theft, this speeds up dealing with the police and the insurer. Check whether the motorcycle is covered by comprehensive insurance including theft cover and what security conditions the insurer requires.
At Royal Enfield GARAGE we will advise you on choosing a lock or alarm suitable for your model.
