Coolant on the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450

The Sherpa 450 engine that powers the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450 is liquid-cooled. Unlike air- and oil-cooled Royal Enfield models, these motorcycles have one more thing to check. It is not complicated, but it must not be forgotten.

Coolant on the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450

What the coolant is for

The coolant carries heat away from the engine to the radiator, where it passes it to the flowing air. Thanks to this the engine works at a steady temperature even when riding slowly off-road or in traffic. The fluid also protects the system against freezing and corrosion.

How to check the level

  1. Check with a cold engine, on level ground and with the motorcycle upright.
  2. Find the expansion tank – the exact location is described in the manual for your model.
  3. The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
  4. If the level is below MIN, top up with the same type of fluid that the manufacturer prescribes.

Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. The system is under pressure and hot coolant can spray out and cause burns.

What to watch out for

  • Do not mix different types of coolant; they may react with each other.
  • Do not top up with plain water; it reduces protection against frost and corrosion.
  • A rapidly dropping level means a leak – look for traces of fluid around the hoses, radiator and pump.
  • A sweet-smelling vapour or drops under the motorcycle are a reason to visit the workshop.

Engine temperature while riding

Watch the gauge or the temperature warning light on the display. When riding slowly off-road or in hot weather the radiator fan switches on, which is normal. But if the overheating light comes on, stop in a safe place, switch off the engine and let it cool down. Continuing to ride with an overheated engine can seriously damage it.

Radiator off-road

The Himalayan 450 often heads off the tarmac. Mud, dust and grass clog the radiator fins and reduce its efficiency. After riding off-road, carefully rinse the radiator with water at gentle pressure, never with a pressure washer at close range, because the fins bend easily.

Coolant replacement

Coolant loses its properties over time, so it is replaced according to the service schedule. Replacement includes bleeding the system, which is best left to the workshop. At Royal Enfield GARAGE we do the replacement during the regular inspection and also check the hoses, clips and radiator.
